“Holiness” and “sanctification” are two English words used to translate the same Greek word. The essential meaning is that of being set apart. So with the related words “holy,” “saint,” “sanctify,” and “hallow.” Any connotation of cleansing from sin is strictly coincidental.

Christ’s church was built upon Himself. “That Rock was… Christ.” (I Cor. 10:4.) “In the Lord Jehovah is the Rock of ages.” (Isa. 26:4, margin.)… “Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (I Cor. 3:11.) “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.” (Eph. 2:19-20.)

The Christian’s life and hope are in Christ. This may seem to many a trite statement, but there are millions of people who call themselves Christians while in one way or another they deny the Christ of the Bible. There is no salvation in a Christ who is no more than a man, and there is no salvation in a Christ who is no more than an angel.
